Happy March! Only one and a half weeks until Spring Break and 2 and a half weeks left in third quarter! We can’t believe we’re already at this point of the year. In ELA, students will finish their conclusions and start creating and finding the text features for their books. Their Book Creator project will be finished a few days after Spring Break. In Social Studies, we’ll continue our unit on the Revolutionary War. We’ll continue going over the effects of the war. In Math, we are learning to divide with fractions and the students are absolutely mastering this concept. Next week will assess this skill on Friday. In Science, we are beginning our Space unit. We are learning the way our planet interacts with the other objects in our solar system. Ask your child about why the sun sets so early in the winter versus the summer. Wow, the year is halfway over! We are so proud of the hard work these students are putting into each learning day. Please chat with your child about how they feel the year is going and what their biggest glows and grows have been so far. In ELA, we’ve started the first part of our writing phase. Students chose their topics today and will work on organizing and note taking over the next five class periods. In Social Studies, we’re presenting our Colonization Simulations! In Math, we took an assessment on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. Tomorrow we will start learning about multiplication with fractions. In Science, we are continuing to learn about the water cycle and will be finishing our unit on our Watery Planet next week. This Friday, all 5th graders will be watching a movie as an end of quarter incentive. They will be watching in different classrooms throughout the school so the school is requesting that they do not bring a special snack. They may, however, bring a small blanket. In ELA, we’ll continue tackling complex nonfiction texts. We’ll start planning for our book creator project next week. Ask your child what topic they’ll be researching and typing about. In Social Studies, we’ll finish a group project that focuses on a slideshow simulation on the region of colonies the group decides to “move to.” We’ll begin presentations next week! In Math, we are working on and subtracting mixed numbers which includes regrouping. The students are doing well and striving to master this concept. We will take an assessment next week. In Science, we are continuing to learn about the water cycle. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. Mrs. Cantú and Mrs. Potts Hello Collaboration Families,
Thank you for all of the stickers! They are very appreciated! We are having a very hard time believing that the school year is almost halfway done. These students are so special, and we’re having a great time learning together each day. In ELA, we’ll continue tackling complex nonfiction texts. We’ll finish up the reading portion of the unit this week. In Social Studies, we’ll continue a group project that will focus on a slideshow simulation on the region of colonies the group decides to “move to.” Ask your child where they’re moving! In Math, we are working on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. We’re finding common denominators and making equivalent fractions. This is great time to work on math facts at home and incorporate measurement and baking skills. In Science, we are learning about the water cycle. Ask your child to sing the Water Cycle Song for you (Woop Woop) and explain how it works. January is in full swing, and we are back to learning! Students have done a great job transitioning back to school. However, some students are struggling with remembering supplies like pencils and completing homework/classwork. Please check in with your child to see how they are doing. In ELA, we’ve started our new unit titled Tackling Complexity in Informational Reading. We’ve started with identifying the main idea, details, text structure, and text features. In Social Studies, we’ll continue a group project that will focus on a slideshow simulation on the region of colonies the group decides to “move to.” Ask your child where they’re moving! In Math, we are starting our fractions unit. Now is a great time to bake at home with your child. This is awesome practice for common denominators and physically seeing how fractions are made of other fractions. In Science, we are talking about groundwater and how people find water when they are not near a large source of water like we are. This has generated amazingly scientific discussions.
